GIVING BACK. Last month, we asked you to share the causes that matter most to you. Thank you to everyone who replied. It is so meaningful to learn about the amazing and important work being done in our community. After reading your submissions, we could not choose just one. Instead, we are donating, on your behalf, to all the organizations you shared with us. Below are the charities you helped support. We’re proud to be part of a community that shows up and gives back.
MANNA MINISTRIES. Submitted by Ashley Mchaffey. “My family and I volunteer with this group 4 or 5 times a year. They hand out food every Saturday morning to those in need.”
GREATER BIRMINGHAM HUMANE SOCIETY. Submitted by Elizabeth Ferguson. “Their team is doing wonderful work to support the pets in our area who so desperately need care and loving, forever homes. I’ve been a volunteer, and it is such a special and heart-warming experience.”
JIMMY RANE FOUNDATION. Submitted by Nancy Jernigan. Helping students pursue higher education through scholarships and educational support.
OPEN DOORS. Submitted by Barbara Lanum. “I support this ministry because they go where most of us would not go to share the love of God with persecuted people.”
ST. JUDE CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL. Submitted by the Staff at Millers. “We love the fact that they take care of all families, at no charge, for the children in their care.”
THE BELL CENTER. Submitted by Caroline Livingston. “They change the lives of children at risk for developmental delays.”
TUNNEL TO TOWERS FOUNDATION. Submitted by Anne Marie. “Born from the tragedy of 9/11, Tunnel to Towers carries out its mission to “do good,” by providing mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and by building specially-adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. The Foundation is also committed to eradicating veteran homelessness and helping America to Never Forget September 11, 2001.”
ROTARY CLUB OF HOMEWOOD. Submitted by Bo Duke. “I am Chairman of the Bill Crawford Educational Foundation of the Homewood Rotary Club. We raise money to donate to Homewood High School seniors that want to go to college but may not have enough money to get started. We also have adopted a student at the Maranathan Academy, a school that takes in at-risk kids that have been expelled from Birmingham City Schools. We also give to Homewood Library, Exceptional Foundation, Assistance League as well as Lakeshore Foundation.”
BIG HOUSE FOUNDATION. Submitted by Ashley Scholtz. “My favorite is Big House Foundation! It was founded by my first cousin Micah Melnick several years ago right after college. Big House supports foster children and their families, by providing back to school essentials, beach trips in the summer, Christmas gifts, a food pantry, prom dresses and every day apparel, and so much more. Micah was inspired by her parents who fostered and then adopted three additional children once their biological four had left the nest. Foster systems lack support nationwide, and Big House tries to give those families in Alabama a small sense of normalcy. I support it anytime I can!”
CHILD PROTECT CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY CENTER. Submitted by Debbie Caldwell. Providing advocacy and support services for abused children during critical times.
THE FIRE HOUSE COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER. Submitted by Jessica Babler. “They specialize in teaching children music that may not have the opportunity to learn it.”
LAMP FOR HAITI. Submitted by Vince Morgan. “My brother started this organization almost 20 years ago. They are located in one of the poorest slums in the world and provide free healthcare to the poorest of the poor. I’ve been there twice, and they are doing good and much needed work.”
Thank you for helping make this possible. We’re proud to give back alongside so many people who care deeply about making a difference.
