Alabama Sawyer creates each of their furniture pieces using urban timber—beautiful old trees that have fallen from storms, been displaced in development or that are otherwise headed for the landfill. Why urban timber? We're glad you asked. |
|
It has character. |
Urban wood has knots, burls and insect holes. It’s not perfect — it’s beautiful. The constraints and adaptations of the urban forest help create character. They handle each log individually with an eye for the best cut. Then they mill it to show off its inner beauty. |
|
It’s better for the environment. |
Urban forests give us cleaner air and cooler temperatures. A living tree provides great value to the community — so can a repurposed one. Historically, felled city trees are taken to the landfill to decompose. Every year, Americans bury 4 billion board feet of usable hardwood trees in our city landfills. That’s almost 10 million tons of lumber. Treecycling keeps them from releasing carbon back into the atmosphere where it contributes to climate change. |
